Our First Parents Opinion Group discussion - head lice.

Our first meeting of the new 'Parents' Opinion Group.' 25th September 2009

nit comb

On 24th September a group of parents met Mrs Robinson to give their opinions about the subject of head lice.

The subject for discussion was HEAD LICE:

The following opinions were expressed:

• Parents are ‘absolutely fed up' of their children having head lice.
• The children feel like victims as they keep on getting head lice even though their parents are treating them regularly. It's unfair.
• Children cannot concentrate on their work as they are itchy and scratching.
• Parents worry that their child will be teased if they have head lice.
• Parents feel that it is unfair when they are constantly vigilant in combing their child's hair, and other parents do not bother so their child gets them again.
• Parents find the attitude of some parents frustrating - they just don't bother. Even in the playground line in the mornings they can see live lice on some of the children.
• The treatments don't work. Only daily combing with a nit comb gets rid of them. This should become a part of the child's daily routine.
• Some parents say that they are doing the combing but clearly aren't doing it properly.
• Given that this is a subject that affects all children, the meeting was disappointingly attended. (Parents had two letters about the POG)

Suggested strategies for getting rid of Head lice in the school:

• The older children could do their own hair if they were encouraged to do so.
• Parents should be pulled in by Mrs Robinson and told to do their children's hair.
• Girls should be made to tie their hair back, preferably in plaits.
• A ‘Parents Against Nits (PAN)'group should come in regularly to check everyone's hair.
• Agree with Mrs Robinson checking and in some cases treating children at school.
• The school nurse should be invited to talk to all the parents about head lice.
• It's no good nearly everyone combing their child's hair nearly every night - it's got to be EVERYONE EVERY NIGHT.
• Parents should buy a nit comb from school. If parents leave even one louse in the hair it will lay eggs which will hatch over 8 days. It's no good leaving it till the weekend.

Suggestion that next POG discussion is about Parents Evenings 28th January 2010 3:15pm
