Aiming high

Willow Class

Willow class have lots of fun learning, indoors and outdoors.  This term our theme is 'Treasure'.  As historians we are discovering about life on board a ship.  As geographers we are developing our mapping skills, and in science we have been learning about how we are special and about a variety of materials.  We love writing stories, and doing lots of practical maths activities.  Willow class take homework on a Thursday and has spellings to learn every week.

Our latest curriculum letter:

Dear Parents,

This term is going to be another exciting term for the children in Willow Class, as we study our theme, ‘Dungeons and Dragons’. As part of our theme we will be visiting York Castle Museum.

In Literacy, we are going to be working on traditional stories, improving our reading and our story writing. After half term we will be doing some work on recounts, before going on to some work on non-fiction books. Each week we will develop our writing skills in our ‘Big Writing’ lessons. We will have daily phonics and reading sessions, and will continue to bring home our reading books and spellings to learn.

In maths we will continue our number work, and our work on space, shape and measurement.

In Geography we will be looking at castles. We will be locating them, using maps and Google earth,  and describing what they look like.

In History we will be researching castle life in the past, looking at coats of arms, knights, fighting, food and castle design. We will also look at entertainment such as jousting, falconry and court jesters. We will find out the difference between real history and made up stories such as those about dragons.

In Art we will be drawing our own coats of arms, using the ideas we find from our research. In DT we will be exploring mechanisms such as portculisses and drawbridges.

Our science work will be focussing on materials and forces, linked to our work on mechanisms. We will be working on developing fair tests as we carry out investigations. In PE we will be doing some dancing, as well as using our outdoor area to keep us fit. In music we will be learning about rhythm and some songs linked to our theme.

Our RE work will be about the creation story, and how we should care for the world.

We will be continuing our ‘Show and Tell’ sessions on a Friday. Please encourage your children to bring in items of interest and things related to our theme, rather than toys.

Thank you for your support,
